So what?

So, Waldi filed #545032, arguing the udev rules shipped in devicekit-disks are broken. He even added a conflict in dmsetup because of that. Whenever you ask him about this issue, the only things he answers are:

  • The rules are broken and they need to be removed.
  • The information is already available in other variables.

It would be nice if all of this was true, but:

  • There is no explanation about how and why these rules could actually break anything.
  • The information is not available in other variables, apart from a couple of trivial things. Or maybe it is, but since all that udev crap has absolutely zero documentation, there is no way to know how it is available.

The result: GNOME is currently not installable on a system with LVM. There is no foreseeable possibility to fix that. Great. Thanks.

That's in the bug, message #34; Joss and Michael Biebl are on the same team.

May be it is the same problem I encounterd with my ubuntu. Some devices used by the LVM aren't symlinked into the disk/by-uuid folder. So booting fails. Anyway for my problem I've found a solution, by modifying the initrd.img by myself. I've documented my problem w/ solution here: http://wiki.goatpr0n.de/blog/2009/07/13.time.to.relax#ubuntu.jaunty.and.two.crpyted.partitions. I just need to replace the uuid with the /dev/sd?? device node.

"Our priorities are our users and free software"

The priority for this current issue doesn't seem to come under that heading.

No working installable Debian unstable, at the moment, seems like a pretty big "user" problem to me.

Then debian is not upgradeable ...

If you have a lvm gnome installation, you shouldn't have to update until this issue is solved, I guess..

I want to give thanks to Bastian and Michael because they want both do thing in the best way.

Debian _is_ upgradable!
ATM in Debian _UNSTABLE_ gnome and lvm2 have a conflict due to the devicekit-disks/dmsetup problem.
If you're following Debian Unstable you should be aware of such problems. If you need a stable system, install one.

C'est pourquoi cette version est dite instable...
